"Well, Canon offhandedly claims that the 5D will equal the 1D, at least in terms of AI Servo speed. Comparing the description of the 1D/1Ds MkII focusing speed as described in the Canon pamplet "Getting the Most Out of Your EOS-1 Class DSLR" .
"Using an EF 300mm f/2.8 IS USM lens and a fully charged battery pack, an EOS-1D Mark II or EOS-1Ds Mark II can track a subject moving at 300 kph/186 mph as close as 20 meters/66 ft."
...with that of the 5D focusing system in the white paper http://www.robgalbraith.com/... .../Canon_EOS_5D_White_Paper.pdf):
"Predictive AF can focus track a subject approaching at 186 mph up to 66 feet away with an EF 300mm f/2.8 IS USM lens. The EOS 5D camera uses the same statistical prediction computation as the EOS-1Ds Mark II camera."
Even better:
"For still subjects, too, AI SERVO AF is a useful option. Focus control is exceptionally stable; the lens does not move, even minutely. If the subject should move unexpectedly, focus detection is always active to enable subject tracking."
This wasn't true of AI Servo in previous cameras. When faced with motionless subjects, they tended to move off focus as the camera continued to try to "lead" what it presumed (because of the setting) was a moving subject."
